About

PDA Avoidant is a flashblog styled after the flashblogs from the 2010s in the Neurodiversity Movement. It focuses on criticisms of the proposed Pathological Demand Avoidance profile of autism, known to some as "Pervasive Drive for Autonomy".

PDA was coined by UK-based psychologist Elizabeth Newsome in the 1980s. While PDA is not an official diagnosis nor is it an officially recognized autism subtype in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) or the International Classification of Disorders (ICD). However, many people in autistic spaces and several professionals who specialize in autism have discussed the possibility of PDA being a valid label for autistic people who struggle with executive functioning and who react adversely to being given demands. This blog was made to share opinion pieces as well as research papers that are critical of the label's existence and the existing internet content and literature surrounding PDA. Readers are free to form their own opinions on PDA, though the blog owner reserves the right to remove disrespectful or hurtful comments.

Readers interested in submitting their own entries to be featured on the blog can email the blog owner at iraeidle@gmail.com.
